Why do Black Women Wear Protective Styles?

The beauty of being black is having the skills to create unique styles for any occasion. Black hair has gotten heat but Black women continue to celebrate their crowns in whatever way. I am no different. I love creating different styles. But why do we wear protective styles?

Here are a couple of reasons:

First of all, they look good. Admit it.

A protective style can really upgrade any look. In fact, any style, done well, upgrades any look

They are actually protective.  Kinky-Curly hair needs a lot of love. When left unprotected, our hair loses moisture and it’s a highly recommended method for hair growth and length retention. Keeping the strands away from the elements is good for our hair.

The magic!!

Yes, I said it, THE magic.

I have known to have a big bush this week and within two days, I have perfect curly strands or a long braided ponytail, box braids, or something.

The versatility is everything.

The idea that we can reinvent our looks through our hair is everything. Creative hair expression is important. There is also a history and heritage embedded in those cornrows and beads. Have you ever seen the look on a little girl’s face when she gets a new hairstyle?

Hell, haven’t you noticed that a Black woman’s attitude totally changes when she got a new do?
I barely scratched the surface of the hairstyle log but you get the picture.
